WHO IS AT RISK?

People who traveled to or lived in the Florida-designated areas on or after June 15, 2016, especially pregnant women, as the virus may be linked to birth defects.

TRANSMISSION

The virus is transmitted when an infected mosquito bites and passes the virus through the blood. If planning pregnancy, the baby may be infected. Also, it's transmitted sexually by infected partner.

PREVENTION

Avoid mosquito bites, refrain from traveling to areas where infection is prominent, long sleeve shirts,  use repellent with DEET,  and protected sex.

SYMPTOMS

Include mild to severe headache, fever, rash, fatigue, joint pain, & conjunctivitis.

Many infected individuals have no symptoms.

TESTING

Blood or urine tests can confirm Zika virus infection. See your doctor or healthcare provider.

Currently Zika Virus cases have been diagnosed in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami, FL.

United States Cases Reported

IT’S SPREADING FAST

SINCE THE FIRST LOCAL CASE OF ZIKA VIRUS WAS MEDICALLY CONFIRMED IN BRAZIL IN MAY 2015, OFFICIALS ESTIMATE BETWEEN 440,000 AND 1.3 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INFECTED FROM THAT GEOGRAPHICAL REGION IN JUST UNDER TWO YEARS [3].

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that up to four million people will likely contract the virus in the next year.

“ZIKA MOLECULE OF THE MONTH”

“This lively interplay of shape and color is an artistic rendering of the Zika virus preparing to enter a cell (blue) by binding to its protein receptors (green). The spherical structures (pink) represent two Zika viruses in a blood vessel filled with blood plasma cells (tan). The virus in the middle in cross section shows viral envelope proteins (red) studding the outer surface, with membrane proteins (pink) embedded in a fatty layer of lipids (light purples). In the innermost circle, you can see the viral genome (yellow) coiled around capsid proteins (orange).” [1]

Thousands of proteins and small molecules referencing the newly published near atomic 3d map of the virus. The relevance of solving the Zika structure marks a prominent step in efforts to develop a safe and effective vaccine. According to Anthony Fauci, director of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), announced plans to begin early human testing of an experimental vaccine later this year. Resulting in a country wide clinical trial if outcomes are favorable early 2017 [2].
